Water Softener Guide
Everything you need to know about water softeners — how they work, what they cost, and which type is right for your home.
Do You Need a Water Softener?
If your water hardness is above 200 ppm, a water softener will provide significant benefits. Above 300 ppm, it's almost essential for protecting your boiler and appliances. Check your postcode to see your hardness level.
Types of Water Softener
1. Ion-Exchange Water Softeners
The most common and effective type. Ion-exchange softeners use resin beads charged with sodium ions. As hard water passes through, calcium and magnesium ions are swapped for sodium ions, producing genuinely soft water. The resin regenerates periodically using salt (sodium chloride).
- Effectiveness: Excellent — removes virtually all hardness
- Cost: £400-2,500 for the unit + £50-80/year in salt
- Pros: Proven technology, whole-house solution, eliminates limescale
- Cons: Needs salt top-ups, requires space, adds sodium to water
2. Salt-Free Water Conditioners
Salt-free systems use Template Assisted Crystallisation (TAC) or similar technology to change the form of calcium carbonate crystals so they don't stick to surfaces. They don't actually soften the water — the minerals remain, but in a non-scaling form.
- Effectiveness: Good for scale prevention, doesn't remove minerals
- Cost: £300-1,500, no running costs
- Pros: No salt, no waste water, no electricity, low maintenance
- Cons: Not true softening, won't help with soap scum or skin issues
3. Magnetic/Electronic Conditioners
These clip onto your water pipe and use magnetic or electromagnetic fields to alter mineral behaviour. Scientific evidence is mixed, and results vary between installations.
- Effectiveness: Debatable — some users report benefits
- Cost: £30-200, no running costs
- Pros: Cheapest option, easy to install, no maintenance
- Cons: Unproven technology, limited scientific backing
