Hard Water Solutions
Living with hard water? Here are the most effective ways to reduce limescale, protect your appliances, and improve water quality in your home.
1. Water Softeners (Best for Whole-House)
A water softener is the most effective solution for hard water. It works by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions, producing genuinely soft water throughout your entire home. This eliminates limescale from pipes, boilers, taps, and appliances.
Best for: Areas with water above 200 ppm. If your postcode shows "Hard" or "Very Hard", a water softener will make the biggest difference.
Cost: Expect to pay between £1,000 and £2,500 for a good quality system including installation. Running costs are around £50-80 per year for salt.

If a full water softener isn't practical, a scale inhibitor uses polyphosphate or electrolytic technology to prevent limescale from forming. These are fitted inline on the mains supply and are much cheaper than a water softener.
Best for: Renters, smaller budgets, or areas with moderate hardness (120-200 ppm).

Magnetic conditioners claim to alter the structure of calcium carbonate to prevent it sticking to surfaces. They're cheap and easy to fit (clamp around the pipe), but scientific evidence for their effectiveness is mixed. They may work for some households as a low-cost experiment.
